Chesty, the USMC Bulldog Mascot
Fellow Marines, friends, and admirers of the Corps,
We gather not just to mourn, but to celebrate the indomitable spirit of Chesty, the English Bulldog, who embodied the heart and soul of the United States Marine Corps. Named in honor of the legendary Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller—the most decorated Marine in history—our faithful mascot served with a tenacity that mirrored the Devil Dogs he represented. Though he never stormed a beachhead or charged into battle, Chesty’s presence was a rallying cry, a symbol of unyielding loyalty, courage, and that unmistakable Marine grit.
From his enlistment as a pup, Chesty rose through the ranks, earning promotions not through words, but through his steadfast demeanor at parades, ceremonies, and barracks life. He was there for Evening Parades at Marine Barracks Washington, his uniform adorned with medals like the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, reminding us all of the sacrifices made by those who serve. Whether it was Chesty VI, who met his end after a valiant parade in 1979, or any of his predecessors and successors, each Chesty carried the legacy forward—fierce in appearance, gentle in spirit, and always ready to stand by his Marines.
Chesty taught us lessons without uttering a bark: that true strength lies in quiet resolve, that loyalty is the foundation of brotherhood, and that even in the face of adversity—like the occasional demotion for a bit of bulldog mischief—he bounced back with that signature Marine resilience. He was more than a mascot; he was family, a four-legged reminder of why we fight and what we hold dear. In the words inspired by Puller himself, “Old breed? New breed? There’s not a damn bit of difference so long as it’s the Marine breed.” Chesty was the epitome of that breed.
As we bid farewell, let us remember Chesty not with sorrow, but with a hearty “Oorah!” May he rest in eternal peace, chasing squirrels in the fields of Valhalla, forever watching over the Corps. Semper Fidelis, Chesty. You will be missed, but your legacy marches on.
